What is the best advice for a teacher looking to transition into L&D?
I ran a poll on LinkedIn a couple of weeks back asking people about their background before their first role in Learning & Development or Training.
Transitioning from a teaching or education background (40%) was the most common response.
Over my many years of recruiting within L&D I have many conversations with teachers looking to move into L&D and they are often frustrated with the assumptions and roadblocks they have to overcome to get their first role.
Here's my advice for teachers aspiring to move into L&D.
Understand the language of corporate L&D and business. Think how you can support businesses to reach their goals
Be prepared to work with SMEs. Your success will depend on your ability to manage stakeholder relationships
Be prepared for a change of pace and structure
Develop your skills in technology and develop storytelling skills to make learning fun
Leave any imposter syndrome back at the classroom. Your teaching skills will give you a good foundation and you need to back yourself to adapt.
What advice would you give to a teacher looking to make a move into L&D or training?
